DESCRIPTION

The Cavern of Tunnels is within Mount Cuselglio. The origin and purpose of this intricate series of tunnels – whether they were prehistoric shelters, Ligurian defenses against the Romans, or a quarry of building materials used by the monks of the Abbey of Saint Gemolo – is still disputed.

CURIOSITIES

The valley was inhabited during the Mesolithic Period (5000 BCE), as evidenced by the flint tools found in the Ganna peat-bog. In Roman and Medieval times the valley was crossed by an important road linking the Olona Valley with Ponte Tresa and Switzerland. In the twelfth century The Order of Cistercians founded the Ganna Abbey and started the agricultural development of the valley, reclaiming the marshy area around Lake Ganna

HOW TO REACH THE SITE

From Varese, take the S.S. 233 along Valganna in the direction of Ganna. Once past the famous caves, take the turn on the left for l’Alpe di Cuseglio. This is a paved private road which is blocked. It goes uphill towards the small village of l’Alpe di Cuseglio. It is not easy to park nearby, so you have to leave your car in one of the small spaces which can be found on the sides of the road and then walk back to the private road.
