DESCRIPTION

The archaeological site of Monsorino is the only monumental evidence of the so-called “Golasecca Culture”, which developed in western Lombardia, Piemonte and Canton Ticino, in an area between the Sesia and Serio Rivers, during the Iron Age. Three tombs are preserved here, with rectangular-shaped access passageways, each one surrounded by a fence of stones measuring from 5 to 9 metres in diameter. Inside are the graves, in which were placed the urns containing the ashes of the deceased, accompanied by a number of ceramics, bronze ornaments, and iron tools which represented the sex and activities of the deceased. The structures are dated between the eighth and seventh century BCE, as indicated by the type of objects found in them.

CURIOSITIES

The site was identified for the first time in the nineteenth century by Abbot G. B. Giani (1788-1857), an eminent scholar from Golant, who misinterpreted the stone circles and burial places found in the hills, thinking that they were the tombs of a Roman camp from the Second Punic War (218-201 BCE).
