DESCRIPTION

At Laino, near the Oratory of Saint Victor, a site which is already known to archaeologists for the fortuitous discovery of a burial inscription from the sixth century and of a Lombardian tomb with a basket of gold earrings of the Roman-Byzantine Period (sixth to seventh centuries), the Museum of Como has been excavating for years in order to unearth the castrum referred to in the inscription. So far, brickworks and several ceramic, metal and soapstone articles from the sixth to seventh centuries have been found, as well as interesting remains of a cistern with traces of earthenware covering. In some areas of the excavation above the ancient structures, more recent masonry, probably Early Medieval, has come to light.

INSIGHT

At Castello, near the church of Saint Vittore di Laino, archaeological excavations have unearthed a stratigraphic sequence which attests to various phases of occupation of the site by man over a period of time ranging from the Bronze Age to the Early Middle Ages. The main occupation of the site, however, dates from the establishment of a fortified castrum during the sixth century AD. The remains of dwellings in this phase of occupation confirm that the castle was contemporaneous with the inscription in the Church of Saint Victor. There is little evidence from the Early Medieval Age to show that the site was also used during this period, or even following the Late Medieval abandonment of the castle.

CURIOSITIES

In addition to the inscription at the Church of Saint Victor, the site had already been known since 1908 as the result of the chance discovery of a skull with two gold earrings in a basket from the sixth to seventh centuries AD.
