DESCRIPTION

The summit of Mount Caslè shows evidence of the remains of an important prehistoric fortified settlement from the Bronze Age of about 3,000 years ago. The site has an impressive wall, three to five metres thick, which surrounds the entire top of the mountain. It has been estimated that the original wall must have reached a height of three metres. Within the perimeter of the wall, archaeologists have brought to light the remains of huts and various artifacts related to the daily life of the prehistoric inhabitants. The site is located in an environmental and scenic context of considerable interest, and is easily accessible.

INSIGHT

Archaeological excavations carried out between 2004 and 2010 by the P. Giovio Archeological Museum of Como have allowed us to reconstruct the history of the site. Six stages of human activity have been recognized: Stage I – ordering of the area: construction of a boundary wall and levelling of the area. Stage II – first use: construction of rectangular huts. Stages III-IV – second use: construction of new buildings and renovations of older houses. Stage V – abandonment of the area with only sporadic traces of human activity. Stage VI – agricultural and military adaptations of the modern era.

CURIOSITIES

Before the start of the archaeological excavations, the surrounding wall and other structures were completely invisible, buried under grass and vegetation.
