DESCRIPTION

The Leaden Hole is a massive cave which winds through the chalky rock of the karst complex of the Turati Alps. The entrance is huge and spectacular, comparable in size to the Cathedral of Milan and measuring about 45 metres high by 38 metres wide. The cave extends for more than 400 metres and has not yet been fully explored. Numerous remains of palaeontological interest pertaining to Ursus Spelaeus have been found, as well as flints and tools left by nomadic hunters during the Palaeolithic Age. The walls standing in the entrance hall are of archaeological interest and seem to date back to 500 AD. In fact, the fortified cave served as a refuge during invasions and wars.

CURIOSITIES

Legend has it that in 1160 the Erbesi fled there after winning the battle of Carcano against Frederick Barbarossa, and that in 1316 the noble knight Guelfo Parravicini retired there to draw up his will. The cave was visited by scholars and vacationers from the year 800. In particular, Queen Margherita of Savoy was a frequent visitor.

HOW TO REACH THE SITE

“Alpe del Vicerè” (903 metres, ample parking) can be reached by car or on foot from Albavilla. An easy dirt road begins at “Alpe del Vicerè”, leading down to the Buco del Piombo in about 45 minutes. Also from Albavilla, starting from Piazza Fontana, you can drive and follow the signs reading “Trattoria Alpina – Buco del Piombo” and park at the location “Zoccolo”. A level walk in the woods leads to the cave in about 20 minutes.

USEFUL INFORMATION FOR THE VISIT

From the car park of Villa Amalia you can take the path which starts at Trattoria Cà Nova (via de Castani) and comes out ten metres from the entrance of the cave. For experienced hikers, the walk takes about 50 minutes.
