DESCRIPTION

Along the Montevecchia relief, consisting of sandstone and marl, a layer of approximately 30 metres in thickness emerges in several places, formed at the base by conglomerates and passing upwards to sandstone, siltstone and marl. This layer, called the Megabed of Missaglia, is the fossil evidence of a catastrophic submarine landslide which occurred around 80 million years ago. The deposits from the landslide constitute the Megabed.

INSIGHT

An analysis of the composition of the conglomeratic clasts has indicated thirty points of origin of the sedimentary material in the area. The landslide therefore covered over 100 kilometres along the sea floor before depositing its load. Megabeds are often events of considerable stratigraphic significance (marker levels), being “instantaneous” from the depositional point of view as well as being recognizeable over large areas.

CURIOSITIES

The most spectacular Megabed outcrops are found in an old quarry on private property. These are recognizeable along the stratigraphic sequence which constitutes the hill and are marked with informational signs along the Sentiero del Deserto (Desert Trail), which crosses the hill in a longitudinal direction. At Coppa Quarry, which has been developed for the cement industry and has recently undergone considerable instability phenomena, the tail of the Megabed, consisting of siltstone and marl carbonate, was uncovered.

HOW TO REACH THE SITE

The Park Visitor Centre is located in Cascina Butto at Montevecchia. This space, in addition to housing the offices of the park, is home to an interactive exhibition on geology, nature and cultural aspects which characterize the area and is designed for the dissemination of content for both students and families. Cascina Butto is located along the road which goes up the Collina di Montevecchia and is appropriately indicated by road signs.
