DESCRIPTION

In the Turati Alps a succession of rocky outcrops from the Lower Jurassic Age (180 to 200 million years ago) emerges, known since the last century for its wealth of ammonites (marine mollusc fossils). The outcrops are located within a depressed layer, in correspondence with a series of drops and small waterfalls. The multi-coloured subhorizontal rocks make this site, whose scientific importance is recognized internationally, particularly striking

INSIGHT

The tens of metres of fossiliferous strata which emerge in the Turati Alps make this locality a unique biostratigraphic archive over a large area, occupied during the Jurassic Age by the Tethys Sea, which includes Southern Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. The following may be seen, starting from the base: Morbio limestone, red Lombardy ammonitic stone and radiolarites of Lombardy flint.

CURIOSITIES

The discovery of this locality dates back to the mid-nineteenth century, when it quickly became known thanks to the large collections of Abbot Antonio Stoppani, an eminent paleontologist of that time.

HOW TO REACH THE SITE

From Albavilla follow the signs to l’Alpe del Vicerè. Along the road, just before l’Alpe, park at the former Albergo La Salute on the right. From there follow the path which crosses the plateau to the east.

USEFUL INFORMATION FOR THE VISIT

After about 150 metres along the path, at the head of a watershed, go down along the stream on the righthand side.
