DESCRIPTION

The Negher Boulder is an imposing block of serpentinite originating from the Valmalenco, a side valley of the the Valtellina. It rests on whitish rocks, consisting of Dolomia Principale, a Mesozoic geologic formation, and its colour contrast makes this huge erratic boulder even more impressive. It has a volume of 400 cubic metres and an estimated weight of over 1000 tons.

INSIGHT

The Negher Boulder is made of serpentinite, a typical metamorphic rock belonging to the group of “green schist”, and originating as a result of the transformation, under conditions of temperature and pressure, of pre-existing magmatic rock (gabbro and peridotite).

CURIOSITIES

Along the path towards the Negher Boulder it is possible to observe a differentiation in the type of flora present as a result of the local substratum upon which the soil has developed. The ground of Dolomia Principale gives way to a poor soil of reduced thickness which is essentially chemically basic. Flora normally found in a warm, dry environment, for example oak and hornbeam, develop there, and there is also the exceptional presence of holm oak (Quercus Ilex) and evergreen oak which is typically Mediterranean. Where instead there is a considerable thickness of morainic deposit, the moist, heavy soil which is produced favours the presence of chestnut trees.
