DESCRIPTION

Serpentinite is a metamorphic rock formed from peridotite, a dense, coarse-grained igneous rock typical of the upper mantle. It consists predominantly of serpentine, a mineral silicate normally of a green colour.

INSIGHT

The erratic boulder “Sass da Preja Buja” is a megalith of serpentinite, named for its typical green colour, located in the northwest of Sesto Calende, in the area of San Vincenzo, in a clearing at the entrance of the woods near the eponymous chapel. There are signs on the hillside road. Near the largest boulder there are two other, smaller serpentine boulders.

CURIOSITIES

The most famous legend about the origin of Sass da Preja Buja recounts that once Jupiter decided to punish Venus and a lake fisherman who were guilty of having indulged in a passionate love. The fisherman was changed into a dragon, which unleashed its wrath, terrifying the population. Even the fisherman's wife fled in terror, but finally fell exhausted in the woods and died trying to shield her two children with her body. The three were eventually transformed by a magic spell into the group of erratic boulders, “Sass da Preja Buja”. This legend is still heard today in the area. In the past, young brides came to pray at this stone, eager to have their homes brightened by a cradle.
